Decking Cleaning
Many property owners across Devon and Somerset enjoy al-fresco dining in the summer months on their wooden or composite garden decking. But when decking becomes faded, splintered, green with algae and slippery it becomes dangerous and unsightly.
Devon Surface Care provide expert decking cleaning in Exeter, Barnstaple, Tiverton, Cullompton, Exmouth and Taunton, that removes moss, algae and slippery decking stains and restores the decking back to a smart, appealing outdoor space that can be enjoyed.
What is Decking Cleaning?
Decking cleaning is a specialist exterior service designed to restore, protect and prolong the life of your wooden or composite decking. Across Devon, decking has become a popular alternative to paving, extending outdoor dining areas and creating attractive garden features. However, without regular maintenance, algae, fungi and general surface dirt can quickly cause decking to become slippery, weathered and unsafe.
Professional deck cleaning removes harmful surface growth, restores colour and improves safety underfoot — especially during damp and wet weather.
Wood & Composite Deck Cleaning Specialists
We provide expert wood and composite deck cleaning services tailored to the material and condition of your decking.
Professional deck cleaning in Devon for timber and composite surfaces
Removal of green algae growth, moss and surface grime
Safe cleaning methods that reduce the risk of splintering or surface damage
Restoration of weathered, grey decking to enhance natural colour
When first installed, decking looks fresh and vibrant. Over time, natural decomposition, algae growth and UV exposure can leave it grey, dull and potentially hazardous. Our decking cleaning specialists use proven methods to revitalise tired decking and restore its original appeal.
Our Deck Cleaning Process
Our structured decking cleaning process ensures long-lasting results and a safer outdoor space.
Gentle pressure washing using a rotary lance for precision cleaning at every angle
Application of Blackwash biocidal treatment to inhibit algae and fungi regrowth
Careful sanding to create a smooth, splinter-free surface (where necessary)
Inspection of screws, joints and boards during the cleaning stage
We gently pressure wash all surfaces and joints, removing dirt, algae and debris while minimising the risk of splintering. The use of a specialist rotary lance allows for a thorough clean without damaging the wood fibres. Once cleaned, the deck can safely get wet — but it will no longer be slippery.

Deck Restoration & Deep Cleaning Solutions
If your decking is heavily weathered, grey or structurally worn, our deck restoration services go beyond basic cleaning. We provide complete decking restoration and deep cleaning solutions to revitalise your outdoor space.
Surface growth and moisture not only affect appearance but can accelerate rot and structural deterioration. Regular cleaning and oiling helps prevent decay and maintain the strength and integrity of your deck.
Remove Moss, Algae & Slippery Decking Stains
One of the most common decking problems is slippery algae growth. In damp and shaded areas, green algae and fungi thrive, creating a hazardous surface.
Effective removal of moss, algae and black stains
Elimination of slippery build-up to improve decking safety
Treatment to prevent rapid regrowth of organic matter
Improved appearance and traction in wet conditions
By removing the surface layer of dirt and algae, we restore a safer walking surface. Once properly cleaned and treated, your decking may still get wet — but it won’t remain dangerously slippery.
Decking Repairs, Oiling and Protection
After cleaning, we strongly recommend oiling your decking to protect the newly exposed timber. Once surface growth has been removed, the bare wood becomes more vulnerable to moisture and further contamination.
Replacement of damaged boards and corroded decking screws
Hand application of high-quality decking oil such as Liberon
Feeding and nourishing timber to restore natural oils
UV-enhanced, water-resistant protection to prevent weathering
We oil every deck by hand using small brushes, ensuring the wood is “fed” with as much fine-quality oil as it can absorb. This enhances the natural beauty of the timber, restores colour and provides long-lasting protection against water and UV damage.
Where required, we can also re-stain decking to its original tone or adapt and extend existing decking areas, carefully matching the finish as closely as possible.

FAQs - Decking Cleaning
Yes — this is what we do! Grey decking is a result of UV radiation and the break down of the decking's wooden surface legnin. Our straightforward restoration process removes the grey colour and naturally restores the beautiful grain of the wooden boards.
First of all we gently pressure clean all the surface dirt and grime
The wooden deck is treated with a fungicide which kills spores within the surface structure
Once dry, the decking is re-oiled to restore the natural grain of the wood
We can clean any outdoor hard surface, including composite decking. Because the material is synthetic it doesn't hold spores or ingrained dirt. Cleaning of composite decking is usually fast and effective.
Alongside cleaning and oiling decking we can carry out minor repairs, full refurbishments or even brand new decking installations.
- Minor repairs such as: replace boards, replace rusted screws, repair spindles
- Full refurbishments including: new decking screws all around, remove and replace old boards, rebuild sub-structure
- Decking installations or extensions
We carefully select the correct pressure and appropriate lance for cleaning wooden decking to ensure no damage is caused.

Initial visible cleaning is immediate, and completed usually within one day
Return visit is needed for re-oiling
An additional day may be needed where repairs are required
A water-only pressure clean is chemical-free, effective, and brings immediate visible results.
However, is using bio-wash we only use HSE-approved products and apply them in highly diluted concentrations (around 1%). The active ingredients are biodegradable and break down rapidly once dry.
There can be a temporary mild bleach-like smell during application, but this dissipates quickly as the solution dries.
10x weaker than standard household bleach
Chemicals become inactive within approximately one hour / once dry
The oils we use (after the chemical cleaning is completed and fully dry) are based on natural oils and not harmful.
